Offwell Wetland Survey

Wetland Plant Species Lists 1991/2000

Comparison of species lists from the Wetland Surveys of 1991 and 2000

Listed below are all the plant species recorded in the wetland area in the 1991 and 2000 surveys.

The 1991 survey carried out after the wetland restoration was completed, found 94 species of flowering plants, ferns, mosses and fungi.

It is important to remember that the rhododendron clearance started in this area in 1988. The Wetland was actually flooded in March 1989 to create a transition from open water to dry land.  Therefore by the time of the 1991 survey, there was significant natural regeneration particularly where it was wetter. Prior to the clearance rhododendron dominated.

The 2000 survey recorded 85 different species, not including fungi, which were outside the scope of the survey.

A purple cell next to a plant indicates that it was present in the wetland in1991. A dark green cell indicates the species was present in 2000. A white cell in one of the two survey columns means that the species was not recorded at the time of that particular survey.
