White Poplar

Populus alba

Introduced into Britain and often planted in parks and gardens, White Poplar can grow to 30 metres in height. It has a grooved bark which is greyish brown in colour. The leaves are lobed and appear white from underneath. From a distance, if the wind blows the leaves at the right angle, the whole tree takes on a white appearance. The catkins appear in March and April. The male catkins are red with greyish hairs while the females are greener. Both are about 10cm in length.
