Turkey Oak

Quercus cerris

Introduced to Britain from Southeastern Europe, Turkey Oak is a tall tree with a rough, grey bark. Characteristically amongst the oaks, the leaf buds are surrounded by long filaments which remain when the leaves have opened, forming "fluffy" stipules at the base of the leaves. The leaves are dark green and fairly hairy underneath. They have lobes separated by deep notches. The acorns are situated in bristly cups with no stems.
