European Larch

Larix decidua

One of the most common deciduous conifers, meaning that it loses its needles in the winter. The tree can reach 30-45 metres in height and has downward-sweeping branches that turn upwards at the ends. The twigs are rough and brown while the main trunk is greyish-brown and has fissures. The needles are bright and first appear as pale green 'whorls' during the spring (see image "larch in spring" below.) The cones can remain on the tree for several years.
